When Master and me first moved to Colorado, we noticed that a lot of places which give out free swag give out chap stick and lip balm. We even got it in our “Welcome to the neighborhood” package for our apartment. Little did we realize how badly you need it up here at altitude, or how quickly you go through it. Living at altitude is a ticking time bomb to chapped lips. The Evolution Of Smooth Lip Balms looked so tasty we just had to give them a shot.
The packaging itself is really simple: just a see-though plastic outer wrap which you can easily peel off. I copied the list of ingredients directly from the label. They are:
INGREDIENTS: (Active ingredients) 7.5% Octinoxate, Oxybenzone 3.0%. (Protects against sunburn).
(Inactive) Palm fruit oil, Beeswax, Olive Fruit Oil, Natural Flavor, Hemp Seed Oil, Lemon Peel Oil, Rosemary /leaf Extract, Tocopherol, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract, Citral, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool.
The lip balm is 95% organic, and certified organic by Oregon Tilth. It does not contain parabens, gluten, petroleum or phthalates. The biggest reason I wanted to give this particular brand a try is the flavors. It comes in lots of them including: Sweet Mint, Honeysuckle, Summer Fruit, Lemon, tangerine, and strawberry sorbet. Master and me love lemon flavors, so I snapped this up as soon as I saw it.
The packaging itself is really cute, and as you can see in my picture, there is a thumb indent on the side. You grasp the little egg at this point, and turn it to open it. There’s a click when you twist it back into place. The website does not say what the egg is made from, but it feels hard like plastic, with a velvety finish. It almost reminds me of silicone.
When I first tried this lip balm, I thought it tasted great and gave it to Master to try. Of course, he decided to put it in his pocket and wouldn’t give it back to me right away. (I think he likes it!) The lip balm glides on smoothly and leaves your lips feeling soft and hydrated, without any greasy feel. We both liked how the lip balm doesn’t have one of those “push up” bottoms like normal chap stick. We find this lip balm to be more convenient. (How many times have I had a chap stick where the dial broke and then the chap stick became useless? Too many to count, honestly.)
The actual scent is very subtle. It reminds me of lemonade, instead of straight up lemons. There’s no sourness to the flavor at all. When you lick your lips, you’ll also notice a slight sugary taste. This reminded me a bit of clove cigarettes (and how the ends are sweet when you smoke them), but is likely due to the stevia. Master says that he thinks this stuff smells like just lemons. For some reasons, I detect a very slight hint of Play-Doh. I can’t explain it, but I don’t mind it either. The actual taste does not stick around for very long, maybe thirty or forty minutes at best. I don’t really find that the Evolution Of Smooth Lip Gloss has about an average staying power compared with my other lip glosses.
While we both really find the shape of the gloss appealing, we both agree that keeping this in your pocket wouldn’t be as convenient as traditional shaped lip balm. It would be great in a back pack or a purse though. And, while discretion is not really necessary with lip balm, no one will probably know what this is at first glance. Since right now I’m waiting for a second one to show up (we both love this stuff too much to only have one), we’re keeping this one on our coffee table. Easy access for us both.
One last thing about this balm? It will help shield your lips from the sun. Yep! It has SPF 15. Overall, we both really love this balm and are going to give it 5 (lemony) paws. Please use the code G5U at checkout to get 15% off of any edenfantasys order!
