Amigu-What-Is-THAT?!

My biggest and most important crochet project has been Master Pravus’ blanket project for years now. I’ve been extremely eager to get it finished for him, but it’s so large that it’s not something that I can work on without help. I need his help just to get it out, and I need his help to turn it when I get to the end of another row because it’s so large.

And because of this, I always have another crochet project or two that I can whip out and just work on when I don’t have him here to help me. Something small that I can lift and work on with no problems. It’s usually something I can pick up and set down again without really thinking about. Not something that really requires much thinking. Sometimes I’ll make door snakes or can cozies or something little. I keep trying to make amigurumi projects, and I have tried for years, but I could never cast a magic circle, and so therefore I never got anywhere and would temporarily give up. I would always try again! Then give up again, and so on.

Well, I tried again recently after finishing another smallish door snake. There’s still lots of places I could put door snakes since we moved into this new house but they’re not that interesting and I thought I would try again. So I decided to make a chicken from a tutorial I saw on YouTube. Lo and behold!! I managed to make a magic circle!! That was the easiest bit of the entire thing, and while I did make a chicken, I fear that my first chicken came out looking somewhat like a giant cock?

Here it is, the first chicken. I don’t know what happened. Well, I do! I don’t know exactly where I went wrong, but I must have added too many stitches to the layers at some point. But oddly enough, it does look like poultry, does it not? Master Pravus loves it, somehow. He wants me to make more that look exactly like this, but I can’t… This was a mistake and it actually looks nothing like the original pattern. I don’t have any way to repeat the fuck-up. I actually almost bailed on it a couple of times, but I decided to see it through to the end and figured whatever happened happened. Since I made a magic circle I wanted to see how the chicken would come out one way or the other.

Here’s the second chicken I made. It came out so much closer to the actual pattern, but it doesn’t exactly look like a chicken to me. I think part of the problem (to me) is that I used scrap yarn on both of these chickens, so I didn’t switch the yarn for the beak or the comb of the chicken. And I think if I did it would look a little more chicken-esque. But still! The second one is my first real “success” (actually matches the pattern) and the first one.. I don’t even know man. But hey! It’s a recognizable cock. So there’s that.

Master Pravus wants an entire army of chickens. We’re going for an elder scrolls theme for the house, and there’s definitely chickens in Skyrim, so I guess that will work out. Hopefully subsequent chickens look more recognizable.

Pattern is this one. (Link goes to a YouTube video)
